The BWF advocates the HSE’s 'toolbox talks'. These are a short presentation to the workforce on a single aspect of health and safety.

Toolbox talks can be used to address hazards, update employees on new Health and Safety legislation as well as reinforcing current safety requirements. These sessions also give the opportunity for employees to voice any health and safety concerns and for them to share best practices. They can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as is deemed necessary according to the topic.

There are no set guidelines on how often these talks should be held but it is considered good practice to do them on a daily or weekly basis to be effective. .

Toolbox talks should always be documented which could be done as a simple sign in sheet which includes the date, time, topic, discussion notes, presenter and attendee names and signature.
